Last summer Dean and his sister Rosa went to a lake for the weekend. They took the train early on Saturday morning because the road was always busy at weekends. By the water stood a small hotel, and three wooden boats were tied up in front of it.

When they arrived, they left their bags at the hotel and walked to the village to buy food for the weekend. They chose bread, cheese and fruit with great care, and before heading back Rosa bought a postcard to send to their grandmother.

In the afternoon Dean rented one of the boats and rowed slowly across the lake while Rosa took photos. The water was so calm that they stayed out for two hours. Then, quite suddenly, dark clouds began to gather above the hills.

As soon as the first drops of rain fell, Dean rowed back to the hotel as fast as he could. Rosa laughed loudly, although she was a little scared. They ran inside, shaking the water from their coats, and ordered two hot chocolates.

That evening the rain stopped. They sat on the terrace and watched the stars appear. There were no cars and no noise at all, only the water against the boats. “Next summer we’ll come back,” said Rosa, and Dean agreed.
