Julia had spent days planning a surprise for her eight-year-old brother, Tom, who was due back from football practice at five. She had bought a chocolate cake, a bunch of blue balloons and a packet containing a large candle in the shape of the number eight. While her parents prepared the snacks in the kitchen, she arranged the table with the meticulousness of someone who has rehearsed the scene in her head many times.

Everything seemed to be in place until she opened the candle packet. Inside there were not one but two small candles: a six and a two. The shop assistant must have taken the wrong packet from the shelf. Tom would be home in ten minutes, the shop was a twenty-minute walk away, and there was no realistic way to put things right before he came through the door.

Julia felt a wave of disappointment out of all proportion to the problem. She had organised the entire afternoon, and the one detail she had failed to check was the first thing anyone would notice. Her older brother, Ben, wandered into the kitchen in search of a biscuit and saw her staring at the candles. “What’s wrong?” he asked. Without a word, Julia held up the six and the two.

Ben considered them for a moment. “Six plus two makes eight,” he said slowly. “We could put them side by side and tell Tom it’s a maths puzzle.” Julia burst out laughing in spite of herself. It was undeniably better than a naked cake, and Tom, who liked riddles almost as much as he liked football, would probably enjoy it. They placed the two numbers in the middle of the frosting and lit them as the front door opened.

Everyone sang “Happy Birthday”, and Tom stood in the doorway, frowning at the candles. Then his face lit up. “That’s eight!” he shouted, apparently more excited about solving the puzzle than about the cake itself. Later that evening Julia saved a photograph of the two candles on her phone. Whenever she looked at it afterwards, she remembered how a small mistake had made the celebration more personal than perfect planning ever could have.
