The Broken Laptop

Iris was finishing her English homework when the laptop screen suddenly went black. She was typing the last page, and two pages and a picture were on the screen. She could not remember her last click on “Save”.

At first, she pressed the power button again and again. Nothing changed. Then she looked at the charger. It was not working properly: the cable was coming out of the laptop. She plugged it in and waited.

After a minute, the laptop started again. Iris opened the writing app while her hands were still shaking a little. A message appeared: “Recovered document available.”

Almost all her work was in the automatic copy. Only the last sentence was missing. While the computer was loading, Iris remembered it, rewrote it, saved the file with a clear name and emailed a copy to herself.

The next day, Iris saved the document again after every paragraph. She did not want to lose her work a second time.
