It is Monday morning. A new student comes into the English class. She is tall and has long black hair. The teacher smiles and says, “Welcome! What is your name?”
“My name is Hana,” she says. “Where are you from?” the teacher asks. “I am from Japan, but now I live in Leeds.” The class listens.
A boy at the next desk asks, “How old are you?” “I am twenty-five,” Hana says. “And you?” “I am twenty-two. My name is Tom.” They both laugh.
“Why do you study English?” the teacher asks. “I want to work in a hotel,” Hana says. “Who is your favourite singer?” Tom asks. Hana thinks. “That is a hard question!”
At break, they have a coffee. “When is the next lesson?” Hana asks. “At ten past eleven,” Tom says. “What time is it now?” “It is five to eleven.” Hana feels happy. She has a friend on her first day.
