My First Badminton Game

Jamie is new in the area and would like to meet people. When he notices a poster for a local sports club, he decides to try its Wednesday badminton session. It is his first game, so he feels a little nervous.

At the reception desk, a member of staff explains where to go. In the hall, a few people are warming up. Polly, one of the players, notices Jamie standing alone and asks, “Would you like to join our group?”

During the first game, Jamie misses the shuttlecock again and again. Polly shows him how to hold the racket and explains that he does not need to hit so hard. With a little practice, he manages to return the shuttlecock over the net a few times.

After half an hour, everyone takes a short break. Jamie drinks a little water and chats with Polly about the neighbourhood. She tells him that beginners are welcome every Wednesday at six o’clock, and that a few of them stay for coffee afterwards.

On his way home, Jamie puts the next session in his calendar. He is still not good at badminton, but he enjoys himself more than he expects. A few more sessions, and he will have a few new friends.
