The Offer She Turned Down

Two years earlier, Marta had said no to a job offer in Berlin. At the time it had seemed a sensible decision: her mother was ill, her flat was cheap and her small design studio was finding new clients. But on a grey Sunday in March, a message from her old colleague Jonas made her think again.

“You should see the place now,” Jonas wrote. “The team has tripled and we’ve just won an international award.” Marta stared at the screen. She tried to be happy for him, but a quiet voice kept asking what might have happened. If she had accepted the offer, she would have been part of that team.

She remembered the weeks before the deadline. Nobody had pushed her; she had simply been afraid. If she hadn’t been so cautious, she would have asked for a month to think instead of answering the same evening. “I wish I’d asked more questions,” she told her sister on the phone.

Her sister did not argue. “If you’d gone to Berlin, you wouldn’t have your own studio today,” she said. “And if you were really unhappy here, you’d have changed something already.” For a moment Marta said nothing. It was an uncomfortable thought, but it was fair.

Later that evening she wrote back to Jonas. She congratulated him and asked whether the company needed freelancers. “If only I’d thought of this two years ago,” she added with a smile. The reply came within minutes: “Send me your portfolio.”

Whatever happened next, Marta felt lighter. Regret had not changed the past, but it had shown her what she wanted. She opened a blank document and started writing the message she should have written long before.
