Mia arrived at the market at nine on Saturday morning. Leo was waiting beside the fruit stall. “Ready?” he asked. Mia showed him Rosa’s shopping list and the money. “We need vegetables for soup and bread for eight people,” she said.
They stopped at a vegetable stall. The tomatoes looked good, but they were expensive. The carrots were cheaper. Mia called Rosa. “Can we make carrot soup?” she asked. “Of course,” Rosa said. “Get some onions too. We have potatoes at the café.”
Leo carried the vegetables while Mia bought two large loaves of bread. Then they saw a box of small apples. “Three pounds for the box,” the man at the stall said. Mia checked the money. There was enough for the apples too.
“Does Rosa need these?” Leo asked. “She likes apples with her breakfast,” Mia said. “And we can have some after work.” They bought the box and walked back to the café. Leo carried the apples, and Mia carried the bread and vegetables.
They arrived at ten. Rosa checked the shopping list and put the apples on a shelf. “Lovely! We have flour, butter and eggs too. Perhaps we can make something with these tomorrow,” she said. Then the three of them started work on the birthday lunch.
