Amir had only forty minutes for lunch before his next meeting, so he picked a café close to the office. He ordered a cheese sandwich without tomatoes and a glass of orange juice. The place was busy, which was not ideal, but he found a seat by the door where he could keep an eye on the clock and see the server as she moved between the tables.

When his food finally came, Amir noticed at once that something was wrong. In place of cheese, the sandwich contained chicken, and a cup of tea stood beside it. Oddly, the table number on his receipt was correct. He hesitated, unsure whether complaining was worth the effort when he was already short of time, and he was well aware that the minutes were passing.

He decided to speak up. “Sorry, I think there’s been a mix-up,” he told the server. Rather than blame her, he calmly described what he had ordered and showed her the receipt. She compared it with the kitchen ticket and discovered that two meals had been prepared for the wrong tables, which explained why the number on the receipt had misled both of them.

The server apologised and promised to replace the sandwich as quickly as she could. She also offered him a complimentary drink, but he thanked her and said the orange juice he had ordered would be fine. While he waited, he sent a brief message to a colleague to confirm that the meeting would start on time, a precaution that took a few seconds and removed a worry from his mind.

The correct lunch arrived within five minutes. Amir ate without hurrying and returned to the office in good time. On his way out, he thanked the server for dealing with the mistake so gracefully. The episode reminded him that a polite, clear request is often a far more effective way of solving a problem than an angry complaint, and a good deal more pleasant for everyone involved.
