Sara had waited three weeks for an answer and then received two on the same morning. A bookshop near her flat offered her a part-time position, while a marketing company on the other side of the city proposed a full-time contract. Both wanted a reply by Friday, which left her barely two days to decide something that would shape the next few years of her life.

At first the company seemed the obvious choice. The salary was nearly twenty per cent higher and the job title sounded impressive on paper. Sara wrote the figures in a table, but the table felt strangely incomplete, as if it were measuring everything except what mattered. She added new columns: travel time, working hours, opportunities to learn and, most importantly, how much energy she would have left at the end of the day.

The new numbers altered the picture. The journey to the company took an hour each way, so the extra money would cost her two hours of her life every working day. The bookshop, by contrast, offered shorter hours, a ten-minute walk and the chance to organise reading events, something she had always wanted to try. For the first time the choice looked genuinely open.

She phoned her friend Nuria, who asked a deceptively simple question: “Which Sara do you want to be in a year?” Sara thought about it for a long time. She wanted to finish her English course and still have the energy to read, rather than collapse on the sofa every evening with a headache and a screen. Put that way, the question almost answered itself.

On Thursday she accepted the bookshop job. Then she wrote a careful email to the company, thanking them for their time and explaining that she had chosen a different path. Sending it felt uncomfortable and, at the same time, oddly calm. She knew that the decision was far from perfect and that nobody could guarantee that it was the right one. But it was hers.
