On Monday at half past three, Ben waits at the bakery with the small brown dog. Mrs Stone is next to him. It is a sunny afternoon.

A tall man arrives. “That is my dog!” he says. “Come here, Max!” The dog does not move. It hides behind Ben’s legs.

Mrs Stone asks, “What colour is your dog?” The man thinks. “Black,” he says. Mrs Stone shakes her head. “This dog is brown.”

The man looks at the dog again. “Oh, you are right,” he says. “I am sorry. This is not my dog.” He walks away slowly.

Ben feels sad for the man. “I hope he finds his dog,” he says. Mrs Stone smiles. “One good question, and we know the answer,” she says. “Now we wait for Beth.”
