As Friday’s maths exam approached, Jane noticed an unpleasant pattern: she opened her notes every evening, read the same page three times and understood less each time. Studying alone was making her anxious, so she asked two classmates, Ben and Mia, if they would meet in the library on Wednesday.
At the beginning, the session was awkward. Ben worked quickly and silently, while Mia kept redrawing her notes in different colours. Jane nearly decided that the idea had been a mistake. Then she admitted that she was stuck on fractions, and the atmosphere changed immediately.
Ben suggested imagining a pizza cut into eight slices, and Mia turned the idea into a large diagram. Jane had always believed she was “bad at maths”, but the picture made the rule visible. For the first time, she could explain it in her own words.
They spent the next hour solving questions from last year’s exam. Whenever somebody made a mistake, the others asked for the reasoning instead of the answer. This method was slower, but it showed exactly where each person had stopped understanding the explanation.
Before the library closed, they wrote a short plan: practice problems on Thursday, a quick review on Friday morning and no studying after nine in the evening. Jane walked home feeling tired but calm. She was not sure she would get a perfect mark, but she knew she understood the topic.
