It was Wednesday, and Lena’s sore throat had stopped being an inconvenience and become a pattern. The cough was mild but stubborn, she was neither feverish nor unable to eat, and yet talking for hours at work had begun to leave her exhausted by mid-afternoon. For days she had told herself that it would pass; eventually she conceded that waiting indefinitely was not a plan, and she phoned her local health centre.

The receptionist offered her a consultation at ten the following morning. Lena checked her diary, saw that it clashed with a team meeting, and spent ten minutes rearranging the schedule before confirming the slot. Knowing how easily details vanish once one is sitting in front of a doctor, she also wrote down when the symptoms had started, how they had changed and what she had already tried.

The doctor began by listening. She asked about Lena’s energy, her temperature and whether she was drinking enough, and only then examined her throat. Her conclusion was reassuring but not dismissive: the symptoms appeared mild, though Lena should pay attention if anything changed. What Lena valued most was not the verdict itself but the way it was delivered. She had been given reasons, not simply an instruction not to worry.

They went through what Lena could do at home, mainly resting and keeping herself hydrated, and the doctor spelled out which developments would justify seeking help sooner. Before leaving, Lena summarised the advice in her own words. It was a habit she had picked up years earlier, since misunderstandings, she had learnt, tend to surface only when someone says the guidance aloud.

On her way home she texted her sister to say there was nothing to be alarmed about, then cancelled an evening out in order to give herself a proper chance to recover. The appointment had not cured her; no appointment could have done that so quickly. What it had changed was the quality of her uncertainty. She no longer wondered whether she ought to worry, but knew precisely what to watch and when to call again.
