On Saturday morning, Tommy heard that his friend Gwen was ill. She had a cold and a high temperature, and she could not leave her flat. Tommy decided to make some soup for her.

He opened the fridge to see what he had. There were some onions, some carrots and some potatoes, and there was some chicken from the day before. But he did not have any salt, and there was only a little bread left.

Tommy went next door. His neighbour, Mrs Reed, was working in the garden. “Could you give me some salt, please?” he asked. “Of course,” she said. “Take some bread too. I made it this morning.”

Back in the kitchen, Tommy cut the vegetables into small pieces and put them in a pot with some water. He added the chicken and some salt. After thirty minutes, the whole flat smelled wonderful.

He carried the soup to Gwen’s flat, wrapped in a warm towel, with some bread on the side. She tried it and smiled. “It is delicious. Is there any more?” “Yes, there is some more at home,” said Tommy. “I’ll bring it tomorrow.”
