Mandy was a volunteer at the town book club. On Saturday morning she sat behind a table with a long list of names, and two women were already waiting at the door.

“Are you Ann?” Mandy asked the first woman. “No, I’m Anne, with an e,” the woman answered. Mandy looked down the list and found a name with an e. “Is this your name?” “Yes, it is,” said Anne.

Next, a tall man arrived. “Are you new here?” Mandy asked. “Yes, I am. My name is Leo.” Mandy noticed a boy behind him. “Is he your brother?” “No, he is my friend, Dan,” Leo said.

Then Mandy became confused. “Is Ann here?” she asked the room. A woman with red hair smiled and put up her hand. “Yes, I’m Ann!” Now Mandy understood: there were two friends, and their names were almost the same.

“Are you friends?” Mandy asked them. “Yes, we are,” they said, and everybody laughed. Mandy wrote both names on the list, with a small star next to each one. “Is the club ready now?” she asked. “Yes, it is!”
