The bookshop on Fernside Road was a place where time seemed to move more slowly. Its owner, a man whose name nobody could remember, opened it only on Wednesdays. The customers rarely asked questions. They took a book, left some money and went home.
One Wednesday in November, Ava, a student with a late thesis, went in to look for an old atlas. A young woman she did not know was sitting behind the counter. “The owner is away,” the woman said without looking up. “I’m only looking after the shop.”
After twenty minutes, Ava found the atlas between two cookery books. When she opened it, she saw a folded piece of paper with a red circle. The paper listed seven addresses in tiny capital letters.
Ava asked the woman about it. “I don’t know anything,” she said. A man by the door, who had been listening, cleared his throat. “Those are the houses where the owner leaves books for strangers,” he said. “Nobody knows why.”
The next morning, Ava went to the first address, a house with closed curtains. A shelf by the gate had a dozen novels and a handwritten note: Take one. Leave one. Say nothing. She chose a thin paperback and left a postcard from her university.
She never met the owner. But every Wednesday she walked past the shop and thought about the strangers whose lives had changed because of a stolen hour with a book.
