Omar was visiting a city where the tram system was new to him. He bought a blue travel card at a machine and walked to the stop feeling confident.

When the tram arrived, everyone touched a card on a small validator. Omar did the same, but the machine showed a red light and made a short sound. He tried again with the same result.

A woman behind him noticed his confusion. She did not take the card from his hand. She pointed to the round symbol on the reader and said, “Hold the card here until the light changes.”

Omar copied the movement. The reader showed a green light, and Omar stepped onto the tram.

He thanked the woman and sat near the window. He watched the streets through the window and checked the name of his stop.
