Eva has lived in Brookfield since 2021. Last Saturday, she went back to the local library after several months away. From the outside, it looked the same, but inside almost everything was different.

Local volunteers painted the old reading room in June. Now there are comfortable chairs by the windows and a long table for groups. Eva likes quiet places, so she was pleased to find a small quiet room at the back.

At the desk, she met Paul, the librarian. “We have already opened the quiet room,” he said, “but we have not finished the children’s corner yet.” He showed her a drawing of the new shelves, which were arriving the next week.

“The book club has met here for three years,” Paul said. “I have led it since September.” Eva had never joined a reading group, but she decided to come on Thursday.

Eva borrowed a short novel before she left. The new furniture was nice, but the invitation was better. She went to borrow a book, and she came home with a reason to return.
