Eva had lived in Brookfield since 2021, yet she had not set foot in the local library for several months. Last Saturday she finally went back, half expecting nothing to have changed. From the street the building looked exactly as she remembered it; inside, almost everything was different.
The old reading room, she learnt, had been painted by local volunteers in June. It now had comfortable chairs by the windows and a long table where groups could work, and at the back there was a smaller room that had been set aside for silence. Eva had always preferred to read in quiet places, and she felt a small, unexpected pleasure at seeing that someone had thought of people like her.
At the desk she met Paul, the librarian who had helped her on her first visit. “We have already opened the quiet room,” he said, “but we haven’t finished the children’s corner yet.” He showed her a drawing of the new shelves, which were due to arrive the following week, and explained that the work had been planned in stages so that the library could remain open throughout.
Eva asked about the weekly book club. “It has met here for three years,” Paul said, “and I have led it since September.” He asked whether she had ever joined a reading group. She had not: she had always read alone and had assumed that it would stay that way. Yet to her own surprise she heard herself say that she would come on Thursday.
“If I had more free time, I would come twice a week,” she added, a little apologetically, since her work kept her busy on most other evenings. Paul laughed and said that one meeting a week was an excellent start. She borrowed a short novel before leaving and, on the way home, thought about how much the library had changed. The new furniture was useful, but the invitation mattered more: she had gone in to borrow a book and come out with a reason to return.
