Diego joined his online English class after a long day. He wanted to practise speaking, so he prepared one example sentence before the lesson started.
When the teacher asked him to read the sentence, Diego spoke clearly, but the other students only looked at the screen. His microphone icon was red. He had forgotten to turn it on.
Instead of leaving the meeting, Diego wrote in the chat: “My microphone isn’t working. I’m checking it now.” The teacher thanked him for the message and continued with another student for a minute.
Diego clicked the microphone button, but it still did not work. Then he changed the browser permission and tried again. “Can you hear me now?” he asked. This time everyone nodded.
Diego read his sentence slowly. The interruption was uncomfortable, but it also gave him a useful phrase for real online communication.
