The Repair Café

On Sunday, Marta took a broken lamp to a repair café at the community centre. The event was free, and local volunteers helped people repair small objects. She had nearly bought a new lamp, but a friend had suggested trying this first, and the idea of keeping something useful appealed to her.

A volunteer called Ali asked what had happened. The lamp had stopped working after Marta moved her desk, so he unplugged it and examined the cable. Marta watched closely and asked questions, because she wanted to understand the problem rather than simply hand it over.

The fault turned out to be a loose connection inside the switch. Ali explained each step as he worked, and he made sure that Marta did not touch any wires. She wrote down the name of the damaged part so that she would recognise it if it ever failed again.

While they waited for another volunteer to find a replacement, Marta offered to help at the next table, where a box of buttons needed sorting. A woman was repairing a coat and was looking for two blue ones, and together they found a perfect match.

An hour later, the lamp worked again. Marta thanked Ali and left a donation in the collection box. She had come to save a lamp, but she left with something extra: a few new acquaintances and the intention to return next month.
