Marta had almost bought a new lamp. She had found one in a shop window, cheap and perfectly modern, and she was already calculating where it would stand on her desk when a friend asked a question she could not answer: why throw away something that probably needed only a small repair? On Sunday, therefore, she carried the broken lamp to a repair café at the community centre, where local volunteers helped people mend everything from toasters to torn coats, free of charge.
A volunteer called Ali asked her what had happened. The lamp had gone dead the moment Marta moved her desk, she explained, which made her suspect a loose cable. Ali unplugged it, turned it upside down and examined the wiring with the unhurried attention of someone who has fixed hundreds of similar objects. Marta stood beside him and asked questions, partly out of curiosity and partly because she disliked the idea of handing over a problem she did not understand.
The fault proved to be a loose connection inside the switch, not the cable at all. Ali described each step as he worked, taking care that Marta did not touch any of the wires, and she wrote down the name of the damaged part so that she would recognise it should it ever fail again. It struck her that nobody had explained a household object to her so patiently since she was a child.
While they waited for another volunteer to bring a replacement switch, Marta noticed that the next table was struggling with a box of loose buttons. A woman was repairing a coat and was desperate for two blue ones, so Marta offered to help, and the two of them spent a happy quarter of an hour matching shades under the strip light. Nobody there seemed to be in a hurry, which was, she thought, rather a relief.
An hour later the lamp worked again. Marta thanked Ali and slipped a donation into the collection box, though she suspected that it did not reflect what she had received. She had gone in to save a lamp; she came out with a clearer idea of how it worked, a handful of new acquaintances and a firm intention to return the following month, this time with a toaster that had been sitting in her cupboard for years.
