Ella and Tom had one week to prepare a presentation on blue whales, and their teacher had made it clear that she expected more than a list of facts. What she wanted was for the class to understand why these animals were extraordinary. Ella, who loved illustration, proposed a large poster, while Tom volunteered to do the research and write speaking notes. The division of labour seemed so natural that neither of them questioned it.

On Monday they met in the library. Tom discovered that an adult blue whale can be longer than a city bus, and Ella decided to draw one next to a small boat so that the scale would be obvious at a glance. They also agreed to explain what whales eat, in plain language, rather than fill the poster with technical terms that few people would remember. The project felt well under control.

That changed on Tuesday, when Tom woke up with a fever. Ella’s first reaction was panic: she could not possibly finish both the research and the artwork on her own. After a flurry of messages, though, they found a way forward. Tom could write from home, and Ella would send him photographs of the unfinished poster so that he knew exactly how much space remained for the text.

By Thursday there was plenty of material, but the poster was overcrowded. They deleted details that were interesting but not essential, checked their sources a second time and rewrote the longest sentences. Ella then added arrows and labels so that the link between each picture and its caption was obvious. The poster was now smaller in content and larger in impact, a trade-off that neither of them had expected to enjoy.

On Friday, a classmate asked how such an enormous animal could survive on tiny sea creatures. Tom, back at school, answered fluently from his notes. Their teacher praised the clarity of the structure and the way they had adapted when things went wrong. Ella was proud of her drawings, but what pleased her even more was the discovery that, when pressure rose, the two of them could rely on each other.
