The Seventh Email

On a grey Monday in March, an email arrives for the whole team. It has one sentence: “Meetings are short when you start with the decision.” Clara laughs. Nobody answers the email.

A week later, there is a second email, and then a third. They are short and kind, and they are right. Everybody asks: Who writes them? The new manager? The intern?

Clara wants to know. She makes a list of what the emails know. After six emails, she sees something. The writer knows about problems from five years ago. The writer also always uses the words “with hindsight”.

The seventh email arrives on Friday. It is only for Clara. “Come to the archive room at five.” The archive room is in the basement. Nobody goes there now. Clara is afraid, but she goes.

At five, Clara opens the heavy door. An old man sits among the boxes with a thermos and an old laptop. “I am Mr Hale,” he says. “I started this company. I want to know: does anybody listen?”

Clara sits on a box. “We listen,” she says. “But we do not know it is you.” Mr Hale pours two cups of tea. “Now we write the eighth email,” he says. “You write it.”
