Leo lives in a flat on the second floor. It is ten o’clock at night, and he is on the sofa with a book. Knock, knock, knock. Someone is at the door.

Leo looks through the little hole in the door. He sees nobody. He opens the door, but the corridor is empty and dark. There is nothing there. He closes the door and checks the lock.

The next night, at ten o’clock, there are three knocks again. Leo is afraid, but he is also curious. “Somebody is playing a game,” he thinks. This time, he sits near the door with the light off and waits.

Knock, knock, knock. Leo opens the door quickly. Nobody is standing there, but something small is on the floor: a grey cat. It has a toy mouse in its mouth and one paw on the door. The cat looks at Leo and says, “Miaow.”

Leo laughs. The cat gives him the toy mouse. A label on its collar says, “My name is Pip. I live in flat 4.” Leo takes Pip to flat 4. Mrs Gray opens the door and says, “He likes you!” Tomorrow at ten, Leo will wait with a bowl of milk.
