Remote work: the end of the office, or a better one? When offices emptied in 2020, many predicted that they would never refill. Four years on, the picture is more nuanced than either side admitted.
Employees who work from home report greater flexibility and fewer commuting costs, yet a considerable number also mention loneliness and the difficulty of switching off. Employers, for their part, praise productivity but worry about training new staff.
The most successful companies have neither forced everybody back nor abandoned the office. Instead, they have redefined it as a place for collaboration: days are set aside for meetings and projects, while concentrated tasks are left to wherever people work best.
Whether this balance will last depends less on technology than on trust. If managers measure results rather than hours, the debate may eventually seem as outdated as the question of whether to use email.
