Simon and his mum go to a small family restaurant. It is her birthday. “Good evening,” the waiter says. “I’d like a table for two, please,” Simon says.

The waiter shows them a table near the window. “What would you like to drink?” he asks. Simon’s mother would like some water. Simon would like an orange juice.

The waiter brings the menu. “I’d like the fish,” Mum says. “I would like the chicken soup,” Simon says. The waiter writes it down and goes to the kitchen.

Soon the waiter comes back with a big plate of rice for Simon. “Excuse me,” Simon says. “I’d like the soup, not the rice.” “Sorry!” the waiter says, and he takes the plate away.

The soup comes, and then a small cake with a candle. “Happy birthday!” the waiter says. Mum smiles. “Would you like a piece?” she asks Simon. “Yes, I’d like a big one!”
