A Room for Friday

By the time Marta arrived at the guesthouse on Friday afternoon, she had mentally completed the practical part of her trip: room booked, concert ticket bought, bag ready to be left at reception. She opened the confirmation email on her phone with the confidence of someone producing a receipt rather than checking an arrangement. She expected the rest of the evening to begin once she had collected a key.

The receptionist’s screen told a different story. Her booking was for Saturday, a detail which her own email immediately confirmed. With the guesthouse full that night, there was no room he could simply transfer her into. Marta was trying to work out whether she could still attend the concert when he offered to call his sister, who ran a guesthouse near the station.

His sister had a single room left. Although it was ten pounds more expensive, breakfast was included and the concert venue was a fifteen-minute walk away. Those details made the extra cost easier to accept: finding a cheaper room farther away might leave her with a journey to organise as well. She accepted, and the receptionist wrote down the address for her.

There was still the original reservation to deal with. When Marta asked about it, he cancelled Saturday’s room without charging her. Relieved that one mistake would not leave her paying for two places, she thanked him and read the replacement confirmation carefully. Friday, one night, breakfast included: information that had seemed routine earlier now deserved her full attention.

At the second guesthouse, she placed the address card beside her concert ticket and checked the time. She had an hour to spare. A message to her brother asking him to check future booking dates brought the reply, “Only if you check mine.” Marta smiled. What she needed was not someone to take responsibility for every arrangement, but another person willing to notice the small detail that confidence sometimes made her overlook.
