A Surprise for Nina

On Friday, it is Nina’s birthday. She is twenty-three. Her friends Julia, Omar and Pablo want a surprise party. They meet at a café. There is no free table, so a waiter shows them a seat at the back. “Is this table ours?” Pablo asks. “Yes, it is,” the waiter says.

“The party is at my flat,” says Julia. “Do we invite the whole class?” Pablo asks. “No, only a few friends,” says Omar. “Nina likes small parties.” Julia writes a list of eight names.

“Who has the music?” Julia asks. “I have a speaker,” says Omar. “But I need time for a playlist.” “Let’s ask Nina’s sister,” says Pablo. “She knows Nina’s favourite songs.”

“What else do we need?” Julia asks. “Somebody keeps Nina away from the flat until seven,” says Pablo. “I can do it,” says Omar. “I have nothing to do in the afternoon.” They all laugh.

The three friends check the plan again. Nobody wants to forget anything. On Friday at seven, Nina opens the door. “Surprise!” everybody says. Nina cannot say a word.
