On Friday, it is Nina’s birthday. She is twenty-three. Her friends Julia, Owen and Perry want a surprise party. They meet at a café. There is no free table, so a waiter shows them a seat at the back.
“The party is at my flat,” says Julia. “Do we invite the whole class?” Perry asks. “No, only a few friends,” says Owen. “Nina likes small parties.” Julia writes a list of eight names.
“Who has the music?” Julia asks. “I have a speaker,” says Owen. “Let’s ask Nina’s sister,” says Perry. “She knows Nina’s favourite songs.”
“What else do we need?” Julia asks. “Somebody must keep Nina away from the flat until seven,” says Perry. “I can do it,” says Owen. “I am free in the afternoon.” They all laugh.
The three friends check the plan again. On Friday at seven, Nina opens the door. “Surprise!” everybody says. Nina cannot say a word.
