Dad comes home on Friday. The chocolate cake is not in the fridge. There is only an empty plate and a little chocolate on the floor. Dad calls his children, Ben and Lila.
“Ben, do you know about the cake?” Dad asks. “No, Dad,” Ben says. “I open the fridge for milk, but I do not touch the cake.” Dad looks at Lila. “Where are you after school?” “I am at Mia’s house,” Lila says.
“Who comes home first?” Dad asks. “Mum comes home at four,” Ben says. “She opens the door, and Rocky runs into the kitchen.” Dad stops. “Rocky is in the kitchen?” Ben looks at the floor. “Yes. He sits next to the table.”
Dad looks under the table. Rocky, the family dog, is there. He sleeps, and his nose is brown with chocolate.
“Rocky, do you eat the cake?” Dad asks. The dog does not answer. He wags his tail, and everybody laughs.
