When Dad came home on Friday, the chocolate cake was not in the fridge. There was only an empty plate and a little chocolate on the floor. Dad called his children, Ben and Lila.
“Did you open the fridge?” Dad asked Ben. “Yes, I did,” Ben said. “I took some milk.” “Did you see the cake?” “Yes, I did, but I didn’t touch it.” Dad looked at Lila. “And you? Where did you go after school?”
“I went to Mia’s house,” Lila said. “Did you come home before Mum?” “No, I didn’t. Mum came home first.” Dad wrote everything on a small paper like a detective. “What time did Mum arrive? Who opened the door?”
“Mum arrived at four,” said Ben. “She opened the door, and Rocky ran into the kitchen.” Dad stopped. “Did Rocky go into the kitchen? What did he do there?” Ben looked at the floor. “He sat next to the table. Then Mum left the room.”
Dad looked under the table. Rocky, the family dog, was sleeping there, and his nose was brown with chocolate. “Did you eat the cake, Rocky?” Dad asked. The dog did not answer. He just wagged his tail, and everybody laughed.
