Lena is an interpreter. She says other people’s words in a new language. Her rule is simple: “I say the words. I do not change them.” Today she works in an office in Rotterdam.

Two people talk about a boat shop. Mrs Ward wants to buy it. Mr Jackson is the old man with the shop. Lena says every sentence in English and in Dutch.

At the coffee break, Lena hears Mr Jackson’s grandson outside the room. “Pop, the roof is not good,” he says. “Please do not say it is good.” “I need the money,” the old man says quietly.

Back at the table, Mrs Ward asks, “Is the roof good?” Mr Jackson looks at his hands. “Yes, the roof is good,” he says. Lena knows it is not true. Everyone looks at her.

“Excuse me,” says Lena. “I cannot say this sentence. It is not true. Please ask a builder to look at the roof.” The room is very quiet.

Mrs Ward looks at Lena and smiles. Mr Jackson is not angry. He says, “Thank you, Lena.” On the train home, Lena feels good. Today she has her own voice.
