The Repair Café

On Sunday, Mandy took a broken lamp to a repair café at the community centre. The event was free, and local volunteers helped people repair small objects. At first she wanted to buy a new lamp, but a friend said, “Try the repair café first.”

A volunteer called Jay asked, “When did it stop working?” Mandy explained: “I moved my desk, and then the lamp stopped working.” Jay unplugged it and checked the cable carefully. Mandy watched and asked questions.

The problem was a loose part inside the switch. Jay explained the repair while he worked. He told Mandy not to touch anything inside. She wrote down the name of the broken part.

While they waited for another part, Mandy helped organise a box of buttons at the next table. A woman was repairing a coat and needed two blue ones.

An hour later, the lamp worked again. Mandy thanked Jay and put some money in the collection box. The lamp was useful again, and she wanted to see her new friends at the next event.
