Evan had gone to the school library to gather material for a project on animals. He chose a heavy book from the top shelf, carried it to a table by the window and opened it at the first chapter. A small folded note slipped out from between the pages and landed face up on the desk.

The message read, “Blue shelf. Four o’clock. Bring the book.” It carried no name, and Evan’s first assumption was that another student had left it there by mistake. He was on the point of slipping it back when he noticed a tiny stamp in one corner: READING CLUB. The words made the note seem less like a prank and more like an invitation that had been delivered, whether by accident or design, to the wrong person.

By ten to four, he was still arguing with himself. He knew the library well, but he had never joined a school club and was not sure he wanted to. Eventually he reasoned that the risk was small: if it turned out to be a joke, he could simply return the book and leave. He tucked it under his arm and set off between the shelves, trying to look as though he was just passing.

Three students were already standing beside the blue shelf, each holding a different book and a similar note. The librarian appeared behind them and explained that she had hidden invitations inside several popular titles, in the hope of finding students who liked discovering stories for themselves. The group met weekly to swap recommendations, she added, and everybody was welcome to come back.

Evan stayed for the first meeting. One student praised a mystery novel, another preferred books about space, and Evan spoke about the animal book he had borrowed. By closing time he had written two titles in his notebook that he wanted to try. The little note had led him somewhere he would never have gone by choice, and he suspected that he would be returning.
