It is Monday morning. A new student comes into the English class. She is tall and has long black hair. The teacher smiles and says, “Welcome! What is your name?”

“My name is Jane,” she says. “Where are you from?” the teacher asks. “I am from Japan, but now I live in Leeds.” The class listens.

A boy at the next desk smiles at her. “Hi, I am Tom. I am twenty-two. How old are you?” “I am twenty-five,” Jane says. They both laugh.

“Why do you study English?” Tom asks. “I want to work in a hotel,” Jane says. Then she asks, “Who is your favourite singer?” Tom thinks for a long time. “That is a hard question!”

At the break, they have a coffee. “When is the next lesson?” Jane asks. “At ten past eleven,” Tom says. “What time is it now?” “It is five to eleven.” Jane feels happy. She has a friend on her first day.
