As Friday’s maths exam approached, Jane noticed an unpleasant pattern in the way she studied. Every evening she opened her notes, read the same page three times and understood less on each reading. Working alone was making her anxious rather than prepared, and she had begun to dread the sight of her own handwriting. In the end she asked two classmates, Ben and Mia, whether they would meet her in the library on Wednesday.

At the start, the session was awkward. Ben worked quickly and silently, while Mia kept redrawing her notes in different colours, as if the right shade of green might turn out to be the answer. Jane almost concluded that the whole idea had been a mistake. Then, with some effort, she admitted that she was stuck on fractions, and the atmosphere changed at once.

Ben suggested picturing a pizza cut into eight slices, and Mia turned the idea into a large, careful diagram. Jane had always assumed she was simply “bad at maths”, but the picture made the rule visible in a way that no page of notes had done. For the first time she was able to explain it in her own words, and discovered in the process that she had understood it better than she thought.

They spent the next hour working through questions from last year’s exam. Whenever somebody made a mistake, the others asked for the reasoning behind the answer rather than correcting it straight away. The method was slower, but it revealed exactly where each of them had lost the thread, and several errors that Jane had made for weeks vanished within minutes.

Before the library closed, they drew up a short plan: practice problems on Thursday, a quick review on Friday morning and no studying after nine in the evening. Jane walked home tired but calm. She could not be sure of getting a perfect mark, but for the first time that week she knew that she understood the topic, and that was a very different feeling from hoping.
