Olivia had expected some resistance when she suggested spending Sunday at an exhibition about the city’s past, and her grandfather did not disappoint her. He agreed, but with the weary politeness of someone who assumes he is about to be shown a long timeline of dates. Olivia cared less about the dates than about the streets themselves: she wanted to see how the places she walked through every day had looked before she was born.
The exhibition turned out to be a collection of photographs taken over several decades, arranged so that visitors could compare one period with the next. In front of a picture of a crowded street, Olivia paused. A small red bus was crossing the frame, and behind it stood a bakery with a distinctive blue door. “I’m sure I’ve seen this place somewhere,” she murmured, and her grandfather, who had been drifting a few steps behind, leaned in towards the glass.
He did not need long. The bakery, he explained, was where he used to stop on his way home from school, holding his father’s hand and waiting for the baker to ask how his day had gone. He could still remember the smell of warm bread. Olivia had heard countless family stories, yet none of them had ever mentioned this one, and the grainy photograph suddenly felt more alive than anything else in the room.
A guide who had noticed their absorption fetched a larger print, in which the street sign was finally legible. Only then did Olivia work out that her grandfather’s childhood home must have stood a few doors away. The guide added that the museum was building its collection from pictures lent by local families, and she encouraged them to bring in anything they might own.
That evening, her grandfather took an album down from the top of a cupboard, something he had not done in years. Between its brittle pages they found a photograph of him as a boy, standing proudly outside the same blue door. Olivia offered to scan it for the museum, but she insisted that he should first tell her everything he remembered. Had it not been for a stubbornly reluctant visit, that conversation might never have taken place.
